Lesson Planning Reflection

I am currently in my last 3 classes before student teaching (yay!!) so I have had the opportunity to write several lesson and unit plans during my education. I'm not going to lie, at first I struggled with them and didn't quite understand the purpose of them.... Boy have I come a long way!! Now that I do understand their purpose and how important they are, I have allowed myself to get more creative and fun with them!!

For this class, I chose to do my unit on 3rd grade research and presentation. I chose this because I am student teaching in 3rd grade and want to be as familiar as possible with the standards going in to it. My unit begins with students choosing a famous Missourian (that they will learn about in social studies according to the state standards) to research, gather information on, and present a power point to the class. I am using a series of graphic organizers to help them keep track of their sources and information from the beginning to the end of the unit. I had a lot of fun finding them online and saved several for future use!

Before going over the 3rd grade LA state standards, I had no idea that presenting in front of the class was required for every 3rd grader!! It is a part of  the speaking/listening standard.

Here are a couple of the organizers I found!

I found a ton that could be used in all content areas!!

  1. Congratulations on being close to being done! I like your graphic organizers! I am a visual learner and I love graphics! I must admit that I dislike writing Madeline Hunter lesson plans. I haven't used the backwards design model but I think I may like it better. This is only my second time writing Madeline Hunter lesson plans. This one is going more smoothly, however, it takes a long time to write 10 lesson plans. I feel like Columbia College should make them worth more points. I know in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter. However, last semester I probably spent 30 hours or more researching and writing my unit and it was only worth 25 points.

  2. How exciting Parker, just 3 more classes, congratulations! I also will be student teaching in 3rd grade next fall, so I also chose to concentrate on the standards for that grade level. I love the graphic organizers you shared, the tree is my favorite. Its different but all parts are essential to the tree to survive. I like it! Good luck on wrapping it all up in the next few weeks!

  3. I have also been focusing on third grade for lesson planning because I will be doing my student teaching at that grade! I love your graphic organizers. I think they are a great tool to implement, in all subject areas. There are some really creative organizers out there too, all you have to do is look!

  4. I really am glad that there are so many resources out there, especially via the internet, that can be used for teaching all ages. I believe that there are pros and cons to living in every generation and at every age. So for recent generations, I have to say that one of the pros of teaching is that there are tons of ideas, materials, experience, and scientific research that can be used in performing well in many professions, especially teaching. To me, one of the big cons of being a teacher is how much paperwork and such there is to deal with, and the fast growing number of children with special needs. What would you say are the pros and cons you have observed of teaching in this time?
