I couldn't find many on famous Missourians in general, so I chose a few of my favorite Missourians and searched for books on them individually.
. My first two books are written with adults in mind, however, they would be great for students who need enrichment, or for the teacher to have information pre copied and ready for sutdents who needed more guidance.
"The West of Billy the Kid" is written for a young audience.
These books on Mark Twain are written for kids, which is great for a 3rd grade research project:)
Laura Ingalls Wilder is a great person to research, especially if we have read her books:)
Walt Disney is a super interesting person to write about, and there are tons on "kid" biographies on him!
3rd grade boys love baseball and Yogi Berra is a great person for them to write about! Students may need some assistant with this book, as it was written for adults.
Last but not least, Truman!! There is tons of information on him, but this book looked very reader friendly for younger students.
Now I wish I owned all of these books to add to my own library!! I always keep my eyes open at yard sales and thrift stores for classroom friendly books. How many of you have started your classroom libraries?

I was very fortunate to have a mom who just knew one day I would be a teacher. She kept all of mine and my brothers books. I have tubs and tubs full! It will depend on grade level, but I think I have a pretty good start!
ReplyDeleteI have over 6 book cases full of books. I worked for Scholastic for a year so that I could stock pile my library for pennies on the dollar. I got brand new books for 35 cents. Maya Angelo, the famous poet is from Missouri. I would definitely read or play her famous "still I rise " poem. Langston Hughes is another great African American poet from Missouri. Charles Lindbergh Lived in St. Louis.
ReplyDeleteGreat additional options for famous St. Louisans.
DeleteI like the "Who was..." books. I didn't know they existed until I subbed for the librarian in our school. I loved how they are written and the kids liked them too. I like your variety of people trying to reach a diverse class and not playing "favorites".
ReplyDeleteThanks to my four children and my love of reading I have a great start for a library for young children but if I ever move up above 3rd grade I would not have a very good start. I would love to hit some garage sales and look for books appropriate for middle school grades as well.
Wow, you guys do have a good start on your libraries. I'm here trying to downsize because we have too many to fit into the bookshelves (but they're not big). I'm always able to find books for cheap at the thrift store, library, and being donated, and I know many people will want to get rid of their kids' books so I figure I will start later, when I start student teaching next year (Lord willing).
ReplyDeleteI'm always wondering about biographies though. Like, I wonder what the people would think if they were able to be here now and read about what others said about their lives in printed books. Would it be truth? Would they agree with others' perspectives of their lives? Would they feel like others have missed the point or important things, or that they themselves have failed in different ways? I feel like people like Buddha and St. Nicholaus would probably be horrified. (LOL Sounds like that could be another lesson strategy or something.) And what will others say about each of us long after we're done here? Hmm.
Wow, what a great list. This will be a great resource for you and this unit.
