Week 4 Take Aways

Hello everyone! Chapters 4 and 5 covered working with words and writing. I am going to talk about chapter 5; writing because I am doing my unit lesson plan over a 3rd grade writing lesson. In the 3rd grade state standards, they are required to do research and present their presentation to the class. In the Social Studies standards they cover Missouri history. I am combining these two concepts in to a research writing lesson on a famous Missourian.
Looking through the chapter, I can relate lots of things to what I will add in my unit;
This project will be descriptive writing because students will be presenting information.
The lesson will include guided writing because they will be provided a series of graphic organizer to help organize information.
I am adding conferencing with students during the last couple of days of the lesson to make sure they are on track and to answer questions.
Students will also be editing each others work and grading themselves and each other on different parts of the lesson.

I am really excited about this writing unit!!

  1. Your unit sounds very interesting! I might write about Langston Hughes, Brad Pitt, David Cook or Kate Capshaw. Kate wasn't born in Missouri, she moved here when she was five. She was a special education teacher in Ashland, MO and in Rockbridge High School in Columbia. Then she moved to New York to pursue her dream of acting. She is married to Steven Spielberg. I find it amazing the paths that life can take us.

    1. My husband taught in Columbia the same time she did and met her several times. Pretty awesome!

  2. I wrote a singular lesson plan for famous Missourians in Teaching of Reading (I believe). The topic will make a great unit, it sounds like you have a really clear grasp of what you will be doing. I would probably choose to write about Jesse James.

  3. Sounds like you have a great unit planned! I think its great that you are integrated two subjects into the unit as well. Goodness, the three famous Missourians are all good, but if I HAD to pick one I would choose Jesses James. I really do not know much about him other than the well-known reputation and I would like to know if there was another side to him than one of the most wanted man in the nation.

  4. I would definitely choose to write about Mark Twain. He was a very interesting person who was not afraid to say what was true but not necessarily accepted by the majority. I don't care for glorified bandits or presidents (although I liked a lot of what I hear Truman did) who may or may not have done this or that because our history books are not absolutely accurate or honest with a lot of biographies, although I wish they did tell history the way it actually happened, objectively.

  5. I would write about Laura Ignalls Wilder. My all time favorite.
